Planning a wedding entails a multitude of decisions, and among the most pivotal is choosing the right wedding photographer. As a professional wedding photographer, I understand the importance of timing in the process of booking a wedding photographer. Now, let’s dive into the ideal timeline to guarantee that you secure the perfect photographer for your dream wedding day.

12-18 months before wedding: find inspiration

Wedding dates can be competitive, especially during peak seasons like spring and fall. This is the time for you to search and get inspired; browse the internet to find your ideal artist, one whose style resonates with you. Focus not only on poses but also on the overall artistic approach. Some couples may appreciate a timeless feel, while others may prefer moody looks.

It’s advisable to start your search and book 12 to 18 months in advance. This provides you with extra time to research photographers, peruse portfolios, and engage in in-depth consultations. Early booking ensures you have the best chance of securing your preferred photographer’s availability on your chosen date and locking in a secure price.

Additionally, it’s a fantastic idea to have your engagement photos taken for invitations and to practice some poses. Moreover, you may be able to book an engagement session separately to get a feel for your dream photographer’s style. I encourage you to reach out to the photographer and express your interest in their services, as some photographers offer complimentary engagement sessions. This can be a valuable opportunity to save money in the long run.

6-12 months before: it’s decision time

By the six – twelve months mark, you should have narrowed down your choices and be prepared to make a decision. Finalize your photographer selection and confirm the booking with a signed contract and deposit. It’s crucial to note that if a photographer doesn’t provide a signed contract, that’s a red flag. Without a contract, there’s a risk that the photographer may decide not to cover your wedding, even on the eve of your big day. A contract protects both parties in case of unforeseen circumstances.

3-6 months before: more details

As the big day approaches, touch base with your photographer to discuss any changes or updates to your wedding plans. Confirm the timeline for the day, go over specific photo requests, and address any details that are important to you. This ensures that everyone is on the same page and contributes to a seamless and personalized photography experience on your special day.

1-3 months before: finalize the details

Connect with your photographer to discuss and confirm timelines, locations, and other details to ensure everyone is on the same page. Delegate tasks to your closest friends, family, or wedding planner to allow yourself to fully enjoy the day you’ve been planning for months. For instance, consider assigning two individuals from both your and your fiancé’s family to oversee family formal photos. This not only saves time but ensures efficiency, as these family members are already familiar with the dynamics and can help streamline the process.

On Your Wedding Day

With all the pre-planning complete, your wedding day should be stress-free. Trust your photographer to capture the moments that matter. Simply enjoy your day, and allow your photographer to paint the light.
